I always used to think that if I ever woke up one morning and found that everyone had disappeared, I'd eat lots of nice food and stay in a mansion or posh hotel. I'd pick up a big TV, lots of money and have everything I ever wanted. But that wouldn't really be the case. I'd walk for miles, searching for any sign of life. I'd keep going until I got lost and maybe had a bit of a cry. Sniff. Then eventually I'd hide away from anyone living due to the depravities that human beings would sink to in order to survive. In The Last Seven, they do just that, although this time they are forced to face their own sins and demons in the process. After waking up in the middle of the road, William gets up and straightens his suit, and realising he is completely alone, heads off through the empty streets. Even though I've seen them a million times before in 28 Days Later and the like, I still love scenes of a desolate London. He walks until he finds himself at the top of a building. Seeming to be contemplating what the point is in carrying on he is surprised to find there are survivors. They all seem to be from very different backgrounds but with one thing in common, they don't remember who they are. While they try to figure out what to do they are being stalked by something and gradually the survivors start disappearing.

In flashback, as the characters slowly start to recall piece by piece what happened to them, we see the story unfold. And at last we can hold the individuals accountable for their predicament.
Although some of the acting felt a bit like they were reading the script for the first time and that reading aloud wasn't their best skill, I could be convinced in to quite liking the clunkiness. And all of that was overshadowed anyway by the beautiful imagery, much of it with some dark religious undertones. Despite its modern look and taking in to account its twist, The Last Seven is actually an old fashioned tale of what goes around comes around. Its about having to come to the realisation that what you are running towards may end up being the thing you should be running away from.
Out in the UK on DVD on the 30th August, you can watch the trailer here.

Yeah that is some pretty shoddy acting, but the story sounds intriguing enough for a rental.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I gotta agree. When you show a city like London completely empty, it always captures my attention. Something about that imagery is a shock to my nerves.
Hmmm..this one intrigues me, I will have to rent it when I can find it.

i kinda like my post apocalyptic acting on the 'o my gawd i've got no idea wot i'm doing' scale. coz that's def wot the end of civilization should do to you. right before you hit bill murray's mansion and shoot him...
ReplyDeletedef sounds like its worth a look in.
Sounds like it could be fun, might check this one out when it makes itself readily available Sarah =D
ReplyDeleteGuns and porn. That's what I'd stock up on if I woke up to find I was the last person on earth. Or if I woke up to find that I'd won the lottery for that matter.
