It's been 6 years since I first saw this film and I know it inside out. And before I'd seen it I knew the actors from off the telly pretty well too. It had a matey feel, it was familiar and it showed Britain Britain Britain off, just as it is in the real.Shaun is a bit of a loser, stuck in a rut. A rubbish boyfriend, rubbish son. After getting dumped by his girlfriend he becomes determined to sort his life out and prove himself. Luckily for him, the whole population has started turning in to zombies. The dead are waking up and attacking the living!! Nothing like a crisis to bring people together.

At first they don't see the horror all around them. Most people they come in to contact with are zombified anyway. Expressionless commuters, colleagues and family members. It isn't until Ed utters the haunting words, "There is a girl in the garden" that they get their first glimpse. After having to kill the zombie girl they retreat back inside to watch events unfold on the news, just like we all do when there is a global catastrophe. But here is Shaun's chance to show his girlfriend there is more to him.
I watch this movie at least one a year (sometimes more). I love the hell out of it.
ReplyDeleteAnd you make a good point: it is very inspiring. As stupid as it may sound, I actually have on my fridge a note that says, "Go round Mum’s. Get Liz back. Sort life out!” as a metaphorical reminder of things I need to fix in my life.
Nice review. I love this film so much. A lovely balance between humour and some moments of seriousness.
ReplyDeletei loved this film. i don't think i've ever seen anything else that gets bog standard everyday humdrum british life so right.
ReplyDeletethe fact it's got zombies in it is a bonus.
Brilliant film and very funny. It was a nice career move after "Spaced".
ReplyDeleteI thought less of 'Hot Fuzz' though.
As Saranga said: SOTD is the most accurate depiction of humdrum twenty-something life in Britain that I have ever seen.
ReplyDeleteThis is a 'once every three months' movie for me, I guess. Must keep on my toes, after all.
ReplyDeleteLove SOTD. Nice review. I remember this film led me to watching Spaced around the time this film came out and just became a huge Pegg fan. That was a great series.
ReplyDeleteShaun of the Dead is my all-time favorite ZomCom. I can seriously watch it on repeat for at least 24 hours straight. Great post!
ReplyDeleteoften imitated never duplicated*
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Sarah!
ReplyDeleteSHAUN OF THE DEAD > ALL. Absolutely one of the greatest Horror Comedies of all time, let alone in the last decade. Love this one to death!
ReplyDeleteThis is one of those movies that refuses to lose its charm, no matter how many times I watch it.
ReplyDeleteAnd how f'n great is Bill Nighy as Philip? Love that guy.
The record throwing scene is truly classic. NEver get sick of seeing it.
ReplyDeleteI watched this again recently. It still rocks! Bill Nighy was a trip.
ReplyDeleteSeeing it again led me to renting Spaced. Behind, I know, but better late than never right?
