swirling gently in a hot bath making pretty patterns against the paling skin of a dying actor
ReplyDeleteI dont know if its the most creative but i like when they decapitate someone and the blood starts going out like if it was some kind of blood-sprinkler lol
ReplyDeleteThe old "switching on the light and realising you're standing in a puddle of it" bit (slipping optional).
ReplyDeleteThis is great, people. Keep 'em coming!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - I need to know who you are to enter you!
For me, its that scene in Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce, where the good guys are in a helicopter, and they are carrying a corpse that was possesed by a female space vampire.
ReplyDeleteSuddenly, blood starts coming out through the eyes, nose, mouth and ears of the dead corpse!
Then, the blood thats coming out of the corpse starts floating in the air and forming the shape of the vampire chick, until she's finally out of the dead corpses body.
The blood creature screams, and then all the blood falls to the floor of the helicopter and the vampire chick is gone.
Thats the most creative use of blood on any movie in my opinion.
This is tough, but undoubtedly, my answer will be from Suspiria, one of the most colorful horror films ever made, especially when it comes to the red stuff.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna have to say Pat getting stabbed repeatedly and in the heart, then thrust through glass and hung while the glass splashes below killing her friend is the crowning moment for brilliant blood red.

ReplyDeleteoh man, I totally forgot that in the movie Shallow Ground, the blood moves around and follows the characters as if alive. It's trying to give them messages. It's a really cool little flick if you haven't seen it. If you do, make sure you watch the making of featurette about the special effects.
For recent films, even though I the film itself was OK, I'd have to go with Laid to Rest. The blood had a 'glossy' look to it so when the killer killed at night, it almost had a sparkling/glowing in the dark effect to it. Totally good and really vibrant.
ReplyDeleteFor older films, hands down, I have to go with Blood Feast from Herschell Gordon Lewis. One of the first users of practical gore effects, his blood literally looked like it was paint meant for use on a canvas (actually incorporating this effect into his later film Color Me Blood Red).
Omg i would say Glen's death in the original Nightmare on Elm street...Blood Volcano = AWESOME!

the slow motion tidal wave of blood coming down the hallway in Kubrick's version of The Shining.
ReplyDeleteSit back, grab a six pack cause I'm about to talk facts about 'INSIDE', which is one of the bloodiest films I have ever seen. There are many gory scenes in this film but the one that get me are where Sarah's mom gets a shank of wood right through the throat, the blood squirted up in the air like a porn star hitting climax, With blood pouring down the stairs like a slip and slide, the madwoman quickly runs up the stairs and grabs the pregnant woman and impales her hand through the wall with a pair of scissors, Well this movie ends up turning into a bloodbath quickly as stated. Very gory indeed, what else is there to say about the blood, it was literally soaked in the carpets and rugs of the house and it gave you a sick sense of decomposition, make no mistake about it, if you're a gore fanatic this movie is the one that will make you almost nut to pre ejaculate a little early.
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower, and I think my favorite creative usage of fake blood is when it's filling/pouring over the lightbulb in Evil Dead II, giving the whole room an uneven red glow.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'll be reposting this on Radiation-Scarred Reviews momentarily.
We're followers!
ReplyDeleteMost creative use of fake blood? Without a doubt:
Tokyo Gore Police...the part where the bad guy gets his legs cut off, then injects himself with some sort of serum that gives him the power to use his arterial spray like a jet pack and fly about the room, continuing the fight.
Gross? Yes.
Ludicrous? OH HELL YES.
Hilarious? Beyond imagining.
But most of all, highly creative. ;)

ReplyDeleteTakashi Miike's arterial spraying in Ichi the Killer.
ReplyDeleteMade me fall in love with all that is arterial spraying.

I love the lawnmower scene in DEAD ALIVE. Esp the part where Lionel trys to run away and does the run in place thing due to all the blood on the floor! HA.
ReplyDeleteOk..I have tweeted about this contest (username FrightFan) and posted it on my Facebook fan page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dollar-Bin-Horror/187954423663?ref=nf#/pages/HAYES-HUDSONS-HOUSE-OF-HORROR/245991024971?ref=ts)

One of my recent favourites was the scene in "Let the Right One in" when Eli comes in uninvited and starts sweating blood. It's a more subtle use of gore than a lot of the ones other people have gone for, but it is an inventive take on the Vampire mythology and a very creepy effect that leaves you wondering "What would have happened if it hadn't been stopped?"
ReplyDeleteI was going to mention the Overlook Hotel blood-tsunami, but my mate wiec? beat me to it. Bugger!
ReplyDeleteHow about the zombie/flymo interface in Brain Dead? Funniest splatter film ever...
Chocolate syrup in Psycho.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason, the only time blood in a film actually freaked me out was in the opening seen of "Carrie". While she's taking a shower and the small stream of red runs down her inner thigh - oh god, just thinking about that again makes me uncomfortable. Yup, that's it.
ReplyDeleteI meant SCENE not SEEN ...
ReplyDeleteYeah, yeah ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is a little bit of a repeat, but I nominate the trailer for The Shining. Check it out:

Most movie trailers these days include the entire story, and you barely need to see the movie. Here they used a minute and 30 seconds very wisely. The first time I saw it, my jaw dropped.
While only eight or so people were there, when we shot Cherry Tree Hill a few years ago, all the cast and crew sat down to lunch one day, which happened to consist of pikelets/pancakes.
ReplyDeleteWith no maple syrup on offer, we all turned to our fake blood, whose base was imitation maple syrup.
From a distance, surely we would have looked like some weird cannibals...
Hmmm...well I think all the old Hammer Horror films made the most creative use of color in their fake blood.
ReplyDeleteI mean, their fake blood wasn't just red, sometimes it was almost DAYGLO !!!!
I shall now go and Tweet about this competition for ya!!! x
I'd definitely have to say the scene from Silent Hill with all the barbed wire. That disturbed the hell out of me!

+1 posted my answer :)
it has never been done, but i would like to see a vampire laugh so hard that blood squirts from his nose
ReplyDeleteGreat Blog! I like the elevator blood bath in The Shining!

i like this question. it has got to be in 'Doctor S. Battles the Sex Crazed Reefer Zombies: The Movie.' Now, I don't want to give too much away in case anyone hasn't seen it but you can definitely tell this movie is highly influenced by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. That should explain the creative use of fake blood part. This horror/comedy is also a mockup of the 30's move Reefer Madness. I highly suggest it to anyone. Definitely my vote for most creative use of fake blood. I'll tweet ya @musingthetrauma and followed you, too! Nice blog!

I think the best way to use blood in a film to your loved one. Nothing says 'Our love is to die for.' better than a blood soaked video that you give to your significant other.
ReplyDeleteThat is what I did, on Valentine's Day I sent my girlfriend, now wife -this video.

Best use of fake blood is in Evil Dead 2 with the massive spray of blood from the holes in the cabin walls.

One of my all-time favorites is from Phantasm, when the ball drains the victim after sinking into his forehead. The idea of the balls and the damage they could inflict was tremendous. Yet, after seeing a geyser of blood streaming out of the man's head, the potential as weapons seemed much greater...
ReplyDeleteFor years that movie stuck with me and I remember running out to see Phantasm 2 assoon as it came out. Unfortunately, it didn't (or couldn't) come close to the original!
I have to say the most recent creative use of actual fake blood in a movie would have to be the last scene of Saw. The part when the dead person in the pool of blood who blew his brains out suddenly gets up and we realize it Jigsaw who has been there the whole time.
ReplyDeleteThe second use of blood is not in a gory manner at all but was effective. It's the scenes in Grace where you see the bottle of blood about to be given to the baby. That gave me chills.
I'm a follower (through Twitter... I think) email - seesoccer(at)comcast.net and I tweeted it from my Twitter @thesarahevans
Rats, Sadako took mine! Chocolate syrup from Psycho FOR SURE!!
ReplyDeleteAnother of my favorites is the bleeding walls from The Amityville Horror. Classic!

ReplyDeleteThe most creative and memorable use of blood? It has to be the original Nightmare on Elm St.! The geyser of blood that erupts from the bed is still so fantastic and creative and at the same time it freaks you out.
It is hard to choose one moment. I have to first concur with the blood volcano scene in A Nightmare on Elm Street. But then throw a scene from Tokyo Gore Police into the hat. I loved the scene with the blood shower after she cuts the man's arms off and walks through it with an umbrella.

The entire 'Planet Terror' film is my favourite with the use of fake blood. Exploding limbs, an arm bitten off by a zombie spraying blood all over the place.
ReplyDeleteHowever the most creative use of fake blood in a horror film is definitely in 28 Days Later when the Dad, looking up at a bird gets a droplet of infected blood in his eye, causing him to rage.
The use of Blood in the movie Shallow Ground was amazing. They actually had blood wranglers moving the blood to make it look as if it were following people. The first scene in which a naked blood soaked boy is walking with purpose is imposing and frightening. read my review... http://www.horror-movies.ca/horror_reviews_2365.htm I recommend Shallow Ground, a very well done movie:)
